Glass Goals for the New Year

12/31/2015

Here we are on the cusp of a new year! You know how it is; you just naturally start thinking ahead to the coming year, dreaming about the new discoveries you'll make and what you might be able to accomplish.

Time for me to set some studio goals, but this year is going to be tricky 'cause I'm all mixed up. The abstract glass work has started to come together a bit over the fall and I've been having such a good time, it's hard to stop.

I love experimenting with form and volume. It's a relief to break out of the rectangle. I love sculpting again. And I'm learning so much about glass volume and heat effects on different sizes & colors of glass - it really brings out my inner glass geek. I have done over sixty - that's right, sixty - experiments just to learn as much as I can about heat & volume control. Please don't judge.

I thought I'd post some images (below) of how this piece came together:

1. Glass cullet laid out ready for firing
2. The glass after the first firing
3. Glass after the first powder firing
4. Glass with powder coating for second firing
5. (On the right) the pieces bent & assembled

On the other hand, the glass landscapes are calling me after a couple months away and opportunities are opening up for the coming year.  Looks like I have a chance to work with Rob and Victory of the beautiful Rob Shouten Gallery on Whidbey Island; I am really  looking forward to that, I like them very much.

Also, the landscapes will be featured in the front window of the ArtEast Gallery in Issaquah during the month of February. And I've been invited to be a part of a group show in May, in the Columbia Center for the Arts in Hood River, Oregon: Thirty Works in Thirty Days (so I'll have to figure out how to do that). Rachel Harvey, a wonderful landscape painter, will be curating the show.

So, I guess I'll figure out how to keep both kinds of work going over the winter. It's all about being flexible, right? Life is full of surprises. I need to remember that really, anything can happen. You just need to pay attention, keep your eye on your goals and don't let opportunities pass you by!

For you, I wish the very best year ever. I hope all your dreams come true.
