What does the natural world have to teach us about our own deeper nature? In this fast-paced world it can be hard to remember to take a minute to stop, soften your attention, take a breath and let your mind wander.
But when we’re in quiet, remote places away from the stimulation of machines and crowds, alone with just the sounds of birds and wind, we have a deeper experience of ourselves as living beings, connected to the natural world.
I hope to capture a little bit of that feeling in my work. I create glass landscapes from tiny particles of colored glass. I construct each landscape layer by layer: the distant hills; the planes of the middle ground; the details in the foreground.
As I add layers I fire the piece over and over in the kiln to melt the particles together and bring out the colors of the landscape. The piece will have between five and ten layers when it’s done, giving it a 3-D effect. I hope they remind you of the quiet places.
